I Was A Jazz Musician Barely Making Minimum Wage
In my 20s, I would play piano gigs at night and try different side-hustles during the day.

I tried being a booking agent… a party promoter… a sandwich shop owner…

(All the business ideas you’d expect from a young 20-something).

Then I tried being a house flipper, a loan officer, and a real estate marketer.

(Back then, there weren’t as many digital business models as today).

All in all, I tried and failed at 11 different businesses.

Nothing worked.

I couldn’t figure out why, until…
One Day A Weird Opportunity Came In…
One day, a weird piano gig came in…

“You’ll want to make sure you impress this client.” My agent said.

And sure enough, when I arrived at the venue to play…

It was like a scene out of Great Gatsby. The venue was beautiful. Everyone was dressed nicely.

I felt completely out of place.

I found out shortly after that these were very wealthy business owners and investors. Some of them were actually billionaires.

At one table, there’s Tilman Fertitta (owner of Houston Rockets). At another table was T. Boone Pickens (business magnate and financier), and another table Charles Butt (CEO of HEB supermarket).

After hearing they were wealthy people, I expected them to be snobby or treat me as if I were below them.

I thought I wouldn’t be able to relate to them. I was a young scrappy kid, who wasn't born into money, I had to work hard to make a living. And I was bootstrapping my business ventures.

These people couldn't possibly understand what I'm going through. I thought.

Little did I know... I had so much to learn from them.

One thing I always did well was to not judge a book by its cover - we like to do it with certain people, but I realized I wasn't giving them a fair chance.

So I asked myself a question…
What Are These Top 1% Players Doing That I’m Not?
As I stayed around and had conversations with them, I found out they weren’t so different from me.

They were people too. In fact, they were even more generous, kind, and grateful than the people I usually played for at dingy bars.

And the most surprising thing was when I found out…

Most of them started off from scratch just like me.

So why did I fail time after time, while they succeeded?

I didn’t care too much about getting “billionaire status”, but if I could just learn a little bit from what they knew…

Then I might able to get ahead for once in my life...

Or reclaim control over my time...

Or finally get off the hamster wheel of failure...

I could finally take my foot off the gas pedal for a bit and enjoy life…

If I could get all that, then I wouldn’t mind dropping my ego for one second to learn from someone ahead of me.

So I swallowed my pride, and when there was a chance, I would ask them for advice.

They’d hear my story of how I failed at 11 different businesses…

And one gentleman (who prefers not to be named) asked a question that would forever change my views around business…
“Do You Think Oprah Winfrey 
Would Have Been A Great Stock Investor?”
“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, Oprah is hard-working and disciplined. But I don’t think she would have had a career as a stock investor. And do you think Warren

Buffett would have been a great talk show host?”

“No, I guess not.”

“You see, not everyone is meant to do the same thing. That seems like common sense, but it’s amazing how backwards the world is.”

He went on to explain the history behind it to me…
Schools Were Designed To Create Factory Workers
Back in the industrial age, there was a need for more factory workers.

So they created the education system…

And the sole purpose of the system was to create factory-ready workers.

In order to maintain consistency, they chose to treat everyone the same.

So it didn’t matter what you were good at or interested in, you got shoved into the same system as everyone else.

This worked well when everyone was working in factories.

But can you imagine what this would do to people today - when opportunities are literally endless?

One of the most watched TED talks of all time titled “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” talks about this.
The school system we went through was designed for the 1800s.

We’re forced to move away from our natural strengths… instead of maximizing them.

That’s the problem.

He told me…

After doing a lot of research I started putting my new Success DNA™ model into practice using myself as a guinea pig.

Those first few months were brutal.

Late nights.

Hard work.

One failure after another.

I also ignored my mentor's life advice:

“Jeff, work hard but not too long. Make time for your health and family.”

I didn’t listen at first…and it cost me.

Then it finally happened...

My first dollar came in.

Then my first $100...

...Three days later I made $443 and I nearly freaked out.

I was on the way…but income was inconsistent.

There was no way I could even pay the rent at the rate I was going.

I felt that spiral of misery replay in my head.

I almost quit.

Then… I rebooted.

I took my mentor’s “head to toe” advice to heart.

I tweaked my success DNA™ method to add in what my mentor had told me all along...

My physical health. My relational health. My financial health. My spiritual health.

That was the trick.

And it flipped some switch in the universe.

I went from “Broke And Desperate Jeff” to “Everything Is Freakin’ On Fire Jeff”.

And even though I had the right mentor to put me back on course...

I still had to put in the hard work to get the traction needed to see real success.

Looking back, those first 13 months trying to crack the code of how to create a system for harnessing someone's Success 

DNA™ were brutal.

Late nights.

Hard work.

Stress.

That was my life and I was ready to quit.

But thankfully, I didn't...
That Was 3 Short Years Ago, 
And Fast Forward To Today 
And It Almost Seems Like A Bad Dream
I proved the idea of “following the risky, traditional path to success” to be all wrong…

Instead of jumping from opportunity to opportunity and never really getting ahead no matter how hard I worked...

I'm now in this state of flow and joy that I never thought was possible and I can work on what I choose, when I choose, and where I choose...

Even if it's cuddled up on the couch with my daughter and our cat.
I have my dream life and unlocked financial freedom without having to trade time with my family or sacrifice my life's savings anymore to do it.

It took almost a decade of hard work, learning valuable skills, and stumbling through the process to get to where I am today.
